Why Is Everyone Obsessed with Sourdough?

Okay, let’s talk about it.

If your TikTok for you page or Insta feed has been taken over by videos of people lovingly feeding jars of bubbly, thick liquid, you’re not alone. From aesthetic sourdough loaves to homemade bagels, pretzels, and yes... even sourdough dirty martinis (seriously?!), the sourdough obsession is so real. But like... what’s the hype actually about?

Beyond the cosy vibes and the ASMR-worthy crust-crackles, sourdough has some legit health perks. Thanks to all the naturally occurring lactobacilli (friendly bacteria in our gut), sourdough can support your gut health, help with blood sugar regulation or even reduce your risk of heart disease, and other plus is also easier digestion than regular bread, and your body just loves it.

Do you want to Start Your Own Sourdough?

It’s Way Easier Than You Think. All you need to start to make your own sourdough starter is flour, water, a glass jar and a little patience (and maybe a cute name for your starter). Start by mixing 20g of flour with 20g of water in a clean jar until smooth, and keep it somewhere warm- around 21–25°C / 70–77°F is ideal. Cover it loosely and let it sit. You need to repeat the feeding process daily, same time and same amounts, but also don’t forget to take a bit of your sourdough starter out of the jar, because it grows quite quickly.

In about 7–10 days, your starter should be bubbly, tangy-smelling, and ready to use for baking. You can use a hairband or marker to mark a spot where is your sourdough after you fed it and if the starter grows same size up to the line in next 4 hours it is ready to bake.

It’s basically like raising a tiny, doughy pet — and yes, people do name them (we see you, “Bread Pitt”, “Yeastie Boy” or “Toast Malone”).

You can find so many recipes on how to use your own sourdough starter on every single social media platform, and creators are not staying basic just with a normal sourdough loaf recipe. You can find many various ways to use it, from just basic stuff, through loaf bread with blueberries, strawberry bagels, to more crazy recipes like Matcha-Strawberry loaf. Or you can try to change your loaf to your canvas and paint on it. There are no limits.

So whether you’re doing it for the health benefits, the aesthetic kitchen content, or just the vibes, sourdough is one trend that’s both cute and actually kinda good for you.
